Midwest Mom who will never stop advocating for the epilepsy community.
My name is Spenser Jaye, and I’ve lived with epilepsy for the past 15 years. It’s been an extraordinary journey, one in which epilepsy has significantly shaped my life. At 13, I experienced my first grand mal seizure, a terrifying event that turned my world upside down. The adjustment wasn’t just for me; it affected my family and friends as well.
As a competitive soccer player, I feared that my diagnosis would end my athletic dreams. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to live a normal life. But through years of finding the right doctor and medication, I gradually navigated this challenging journey. I went on to play Division I soccer at the University of Hawaii and even represented Guam and played on the Guam Women’s National team.
While seizures occasionally interrupted my athletic pursuits, I refused to let them define me. My love for the game was too strong to give up. I fought hard to continue playing the sport I loved, all while living with epilepsy. Inspired by my experiences, I founded the 1 in 26 Athlete Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering athletes with epilepsy. Our mission is to encourage individuals with epilepsy to pursue their athletic passions, regardless of their condition. We believe that everyone faces challenges, but that we are stronger than any seizure that may come our way.
Epilepsy, in a strange way, has been a blessing. It has introduced me to incredible people with epilepsy from around the world and allowed me to hear their inspiring stories. I’m grateful to be part of this community and to have overcome the obstacles that epilepsy has presented. Without it, I wouldn’t be the strong person I am today.

Kind words you would like to share with a parent or someone newly diagnosed:
It can be difficult to talk about, but one of the most important things is to let others know about your condition and educate them on what to do in case of a seizure. By being open and proactive, you can ensure your safety and create a supportive environment. Remember, this journey is taken one step at a time. If you need support or guidance, I’m always here if anyone ever needs to reach out.
