Midwest Mom who will never stop advocating for the epilepsy community.

Hey friends! My name is Zara and my epilepsy journey began on June 8th, 2024 at the age of 21. My first seizure happened around 1:30 in the morning after working backstage on a local theatre production and while watching movies with my mom like I always do over the summer.
My mom knew exactly what to do because my aunt also has epilepsy. We called paramedics and I spent most of that morning in the emergency room and was later discharged and referred to a neurologist, where I was diagnosed with epilepsy.
Since my initial diagnosis I have been put on medications and have changed medications numerous times, trying to find the one that works best for me. I have had at least one seizure each month and all my seizures except one have happened after 7:30 pm. When I have a seizure I do not remember up to 2-3 hours before and am very out of it afterwords, and have only had known auras for 2 of my seizures.
As much as epilepsy has been a challenge in my life it has in no way stopped me from being the outgoing, social, active person I have always been. I am currently a senior in college majoring in Elementary Education and am a member of my universities color guard, and yearbook clubs.

I am still learning each and everyday how to navigate this “new normal” and am in no way an expert in epilepsy. This is just my story and I am learning day by day. Some days are better than others but I know I will be okay.
Kind words you would like to share with a parent or someone newly diagnosed:
If you are a parent of someone with epilepsy or someone newly diagnosed I want you to know you are not alone. It can feel like a lonely place at times but there are so many people living with epilepsy daily and so many people are willing to help, talk or just be a friendly face. Epilepsy is a part of you but it does not define you. You are strong and you are loved. You got this!
